There are five island groups in all, with the Society Islands being the most populated and having the majority of tourist attractions and accommodations. The main island and population centre of French Polynesia, is Tahiti, a high volcanic island about 40 sq. km in size. Moorea has some spectacular bays and is the second most popular island destination although the best known is the lagoon island of Bora Bora which has a fantastic lagoon, great snorkelling and lots of over water bungalows. The beaches in general around theTahiti Islands are beautiful and there are plenty of commercial resorts, many offering over water bungalows. One of the unsung highlights is exploring the stunning mountainous interiors and surfing on the north shore beaches. Tahiti is also well known for its black pearls which are farmed in the large atolls of the Tuamotu Group, a region with excellent diving reefs and growing tourist facilities. French Polynesia however is an expensive destination to travel around.
